SMILES ACROSS AMERICA® ANNOUNCES NEW PARTNERSHIP IN DALLAS

Baylor College of Dentistry Texas A&M Health Science Center in Dallas is the newest health provider to receive funding from Oral Health America's Smiles Across America® program. On November 10 at James Bonham Elementary School in Dallas, Beth Truett, President and CEO of OHA, presented Dr. Daniel Jones, Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at HSC Baylor College of Dentistry, with a $25,000 check that will significantly expand the dental school's Dallas County Sealant Initiative in the Dallas Independent School District. OHA's grant is made possible through generous support for Smiles Across America from Trident®.

"We are very pleased to welcome Baylor College of Dentistry to our Smiles Across America family of care providers," said Ms. Truett. "Through our combined efforts, we can raise public awareness about the important of oral health and hygiene and proactively provide education and services to those who lack access to routine dental care."

The launch event was featured in The Dallas Morning News, and on Dallas' CBS news station and the Dallas Independent School District's cable channel.  Telemundo filmed a segment in Spanish about the new partnership, and the importance of school oral health services and oral health care with Dr. Grace Snuggs, DDS, Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry at BCD TAMHSC.

"On the tenth anniversary of our Dallas County Sealant Initiative, we could not be more pleased to welcome Oral Health America's support and partnership through the Smiles Across America program," said Dr. Jones.  "This donation will allow us to double the number of schools we will reach in the Dallas Independent School District, and our dental students will be in schools four days a week, providing preventive care for children who are typically without a routine dental care provider."

PLEASE JOIN OHA'S EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE ORAL HEALTH OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC

Dear Friends of Oral Health America,

In this season of giving, we are grateful for the wonderful support that Oral Health America receives, and mindful of what our organization gives back to our country. Oral Health America's Annual Fund campaign brings essential support from individuals like you who believe that all Americans should be able to obtain the dental care they need.

Giving a gift "in honor" or "in memory" of a friend, loved one, colleague, or customer at Thanksgiving
or throughout the Holiday season is a great way to change lives, especially the lives of those who are most vulnerable.

Please read about Ms. Lorene Kent's gift "in memory" of her Father and consider what unique opportunity you might have to help OHA work with communities throughout the country. Your gift can connect them with resources to bring sustainable dental care programs to rural and urban neighborhoods from New York and West Virginia to Minnesota, Nevada and California.

With gratitude and good wishes,

DONOR PROFILE: Lorene Kent

After 25 years as a practicing dental hygienist, Lorene Kent, RDH, BS, stepped away from a career chairside and redefined her participation in the oral health care community by becoming publisher of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, a nationally circulated professional journal that reaches more than 67,000 dental hygienists in practice as well as every senior level dental hygiene student in the nation.

When Oral Health America asked Ms. Kent to become involved with the organization she says she was thrilled by the opportunity to help OHA fulfill its mission of improving the oral health of at-risk children and adults.

"OHA is rooted in the belief that oral health is integral to overall health, and the organization successfully fulfills its mission through its community based programs," Ms. Kent says. "I joined the OHA Board of Directors and actively support its programs because of my own experiences as a dental hygienist-recognizing the continuing need for dental services among underserved children and adults throughout the country."

In addition to serving on the Board, Ms. Kent emphasizes how the OHA's power to reach needy communities and make a difference continues to drive her strong personal support. The tens of thousands of sealants and fluoride varnish treatments made available to at-risk communities across the country by OHA's Smiles Across America®
program, Ms. Kent says, exemplifies the importance of the organization's work.

"OHA's programs provide an immeasurable difference for underserved children and adults who might otherwise face life with significant dental handicaps," Ms. Kent says.

"It gives me great pride to be able to give a financial gift to OHA's Annual Fund in memory of my father that will go back to community based programs and work to benefit underserved kids and adults," Ms. Kent says.

She adds: "I can't imagine a better gift to give at during this joyous holiday season."
URGENT! ADVOCACY ALERT

During a mark-up tomorrow, Thursday, November 19, the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is set to address current language referring to the nationalization of the Community Health Aid Therapist program, which now provides dental care along with health care services to Native Americans in Alaska.

We urge you to contact your Senator immediately if he or she is on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

Click here to see the Committee Membership

Find a list of your elected officials here: http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml

Please state: As you consider the Indian Health Improvement Act, I am writing to ask you to allow Native American tribes in the 49 states outside of Alaska to be able to assess the viability of the Community Health Aid Therapist program, including dental health therapist services. Health reform must include oral heatlh reform and promote equal access to oral healthcare services for all Americans, including those most vunerable.

Let us know if you reached out to your Senator! Email Melissa Hoebbel, melissa@oralhealthamerica.org and tell us about your experience.

CORPORATE DONOR PROFILE: 3M ESPE
Steven Bonfig, Global Communications Manager 3M ESPE Dental Products and Ellen Neuenfeldt, Manger of Professional Relations 3M ESPE Dental Products, spoke to Oral Health America about the importance of giving back to communities through OHA's Product Donation Project.  3M ESPE provides thousands of sealants to OHA's partners and is helping us accomplish our goal of sealing one million teeth by 2010! 3M ESPE also generously gives to OHA's annual fund.

Here's what they had to say:

OHA: Why does 3M ESPE contribute to OHA?

3M: Actively supporting educational, health, social services and other programs has been part of our corporate values from the very start of 3M as a company. That value remains in place today.  Specifically as it relates to 3M ESPE, the dental division of 3M and our support of OHA, there is a solid alignment of mission around improving access to care for those in greatest need.  With that common sense of purpose, we feel we're supporting a cause that truly matters, and an organization that not only shares the cause, but is also set up to get results that make a difference.

OHA: Whenever OHA's partners are in desperate need of dental supplies like Clinpro™ sealant and Vanish™, your company frequently goes the extra mile to make sure our community partners are receiving the products they need.  Can you explain why 3M ESPE is so generous in donating supplies to our partners?

3M: It's a natural extension of the reasoning stated above.  We have products that can help make a difference, it's the right thing to do, we're in a position to do it, and so we do.  It's part of the mission to improve access to oral care.

OHA: In addition to providing funding and donating products, 3M ESPE employees are known for actively participating in Smiles Across Minnesota. How has this experience impacted 3M ESPE's involvement in OHA's programs?

3M: There are a couple of factors here.  I think we try extra hard to make a difference in communities where 3M has a presence.  As a Minnesota-based company, and with Smiles Across Minnesota evolving out of the OHA Smiles Across America program, there were a number of connections sort of "built-in" that aligned quickly and positively. It takes many partners to make these programs work. The evolution and growth of Smiles Across Minnesota has been phenomenal and, along with OHA, we're happy and proud to be a part of that success in our home state.

NATIONAL SPIT TOBACCO EDUCATION PROGRAM

Like too many teenagers, Gruen Von Behrens first tried spit tobacco at age 13 to "fit in." By age 17, he had been diagnosed with oral cancer. Sine then he's experienced almost 30 disfiguring surgeries to save his life.

Mr. Von Behrens, a Stewardson, IL native, now travels on behalf of Oral Health America's National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP) and shares with youth and families the real life consequences of his own spit tobacco use. He is especially effective with young audiences, warning them to stay away from the spit tobacco that he believes caused his cancer.

If you are interested in having Gruen speak, please contact him at: gruenvonbehrens@hotmail.com or by calling 217-821-5739
