Smiles Across Minnesota:
Identifying Needs and Eliminating Barriers to Care

SAA Minnesota GroupOral Health America and Smiles Across Minnesota celebrated the expansion of their statewide preventive dental program to St. Cloud Area public elementary schools in March.

"The program allows us to serve a large number of students who may not have access to preventive dental care," said Dr. Steve Jordahl, superintendent of St. Cloud Area School District 742.

"Community-based programs are cost-effective. Children receiving dental sealants in school-based programs have 60 percent less decay for up to five years. We anticipate serving 1,000 children in the first year, at a minimum," said Sarah Wovcha, executive director of Children's Dental Services and co-chair of Smiles Across Minnesota.

Director of Finance, Tom Mesich, emphasized the program's focus on uninsured and underinsured children. "If a family already has commercial insurance, those children and their parents will be encouraged to visit their previously established dental home."

"Our goal was to create a model for Smiles Across Minnesota that can be tailored to fit community needs throughout the state," said Ann Johnson, director of community affairs at Delta Dental of Minnesota, and co-chair of Smiles Across Minnesota.

Delta Dental of Minnesota and Children's Dental Services launched the Smiles Across Minnesota coalition in 2006 as a partner with Oral Health America's Smiles Across America® program.

School-Based Clinics Reduce Lost School Hours
Hern with Child St. CloudStephanie Hern is a collaborative practice registered dental hygienist with Children's Dental Services in the St. Cloud, Minnesota public schools.  She takes a vested interest in each patient with whom she works. She reports that of the twelve patients she saw at Lincoln Elementary School in St Cloud recently, only two had ever been to the dentist and every child needed extensive dental care.

"I made the assessment that significant restorative work was needed and if left untreated could have led to abscessed teeth," says Hern.  "I referred the twelve children to a local dentist immediately." Hern sees children with special needs as well. "Our last patient of the day yesterday was a child with autism, with a great deal of sensory issues.  By the end of our time together she was giggling."

Several of the children that received care at Lincoln Elementary were uninsured.  Support received from OHA's Smiles Across America® supporters, including Trident® gum, Delta Dental, Patterson Dental and 3M ESPE, as well as donated dental supplies from Oral Health America, helped offset their costs for more than $600 worth of needed preventive dental care on just that one day.
Oral Health Advocacy Updates:
Oral Health America Releases Policy Statement on Healthcare Reform; Senate Committees Consider Policy Options

Oral Health America's Board of Directors has approved a Policy Position Statement on Oral Health and Healthcare reform, available now at www.oralhealthamerica.org/Advocacy.html

The Senate Finance Committee and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which share jurisdiction over health care reform legislation, are currently holding conversations with a myriad of stakeholders regarding a comprehensive health reform bill.  Their intention is to craft similar bills by June so that the measures can be quickly merged into a single bill for consideration on the Senate floor.

Oral Health America is joining the American Dental Education Association in urging oral health supporters to contact your Senators now through Memorial Day Weekend.

Contact information for your Senators can be found at: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home.

Call or email your Senators today stating:
Any comprehensive reform of the U.S. health care system must 1) provide universal health coverage including full oral health benefits and access to high-quality, cost-effective preventive, restorative, and primary oral health care services, and 2) encourage universal participation.

When calling, ask for the Legislative Assistant in charge of health issues.  Communicate the message above and say that you would like your Senator to use his/her influence with members of the Senate Finance and HELP Committees to ensure that access to and coverage of oral health services is included in any health care reform legislation.

Email us about your experience in contacting your Senators at liz@oralhealthamerica.org.  Thank you!
Donor Spotlight: Twana Edwards, DDS

Twana EdwardsTwana Edwards, DDS, has worked in the Chicago Public Schools since 2004.  A 1994 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Dr. Edwards decided to become a dentist in high school, while working part time with her own dentist who sparked her interest in the profession.  Dr. Edwards has collaborated with Oral Health America's Smiles Across America®, which impacts 60,000 children through the Chicago Public School Oral Health Program.

Oral Health America asked Dr. Edwards about her connection to our organization.

OHA: What makes Oral Health America unique?

Dr. Edwards: The first thing I noticed during my initial meeting with OHA was that the entire staff seemed so committed to the mission of the organization. That enthusiasm and passion still exists today and I think that is what makes OHA unique.

OHA: Why do you choose to support Oral Health America?

Dr. Edwards: Currently it seems that the majority of dental organizations are focusing on making dentistry accessible to all.  Based on my experiences working in the schools, I think the focus should be on educating people about the importance of oral health.  I decided to support Oral Health America because of their commitment to spreading the word about how good oral health is imperative to the overall health of the body.
Northeast Delta Dental Approves Support for Smiles Across America®

Northeast Delta Dental Foundation, Inc. has awarded a $5,000 grant to Oral Health America in support of Smiles Across America®, a program that helps communities nation-wide in developing infrastructure to address unmet dental care needs.

"The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Board voted unanimously to grant funds to support the work of Smiles Across America in Maine," said Kathleen Walker, APR, Treasurer, Northeast Delta Dental Foundation, Inc.  "We appreciate partnering with Oral Health America and other funders to ensure that the sum of our efforts has a meaningful impact on the lives of families in the region."

In Maine, Smiles Across America supports school-based and school-linked dental programs that impact over 8,000 children annually in Presque Isle, Machias, and Portland.  Shortages of dentists in Maine contribute to the challenges presented in a largely rural state, where the nearest dental clinic can be up to two hours away.  Smiles Across America-funded care providers in Maine see children regularly who are suffering from untreated tooth decay.

"Oral Health America is particularly heartened by the local support that Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has provided, as well as their recognition of the benefits of collaborating beyond the region with a national program," said Beth Truett, President and CEO, Oral Health America.  "We are deeply appreciative of their grant, and acknowledge our responsibility to the children of Maine in expanding access to care."
